Mitsubishi have a range of great looking and versatile 4x4 cars, each with different characteristics suited to different types of driver requirements. They have the Mitsubishi Outlander, Shogun, ASX Crossover, and the L200. The one thing they all have in common is that they are no-nonsense vehicles with bags of capability, and character. ( R7THDP8YPT85 ) The L200 is probably the strongest workhorse out of the range, and when you choose the double-cab model it combines the practicality of a family car with the strength and capability of a 4x4. Here is a summary of the different four-wheel drive vehicles that Mitsubishi offer:
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a 7 Seater 4x4
The Outlander combines the capabilities of a large family car with that of a four wheel drive. The third-generation of the vehicle was released in 2012 and it has many features that make it a great vehicle for family driving. Some of these include the flexible load space with the aid of the split seats and fold down second and third rows. It has Adaptive Cruise Control to detect and adapt to vehicles up to 200m in front. Cost-wise it has low running costs thanks to its efficient engines (approx. 53MPG fuel economy), and the manual gearbox version costs only £125 per year to tax! When you consider it also has an 'eco drive' mode that automatically manages the engine and system components to minimise fuel consumption, this is probably one of the best cars to own if low running costs is a priority.
Consider it looks great and has four wheel drive as well the Outlander is definitely one of Mitsubishi's most versatile 4x4's.
Mitsubishi's Urban Crossover: The ASX
The Mitsubishi ASX is coined as an 'urban crossover' meaning it is built on a car platform or chassis but with components and features of a Sports Utility Vehicle. The term ASX actually stands for 'Active Sports Crossover', and the features incorporated into the car live up to this name very well and are well suited to family life. It features technology such as Bluetooth, air conditioning, satellite navigation, a stop / start engine button, and full leather trim. There are a choice of petrol and diesel engines and they have been designed to have a low environmental impact. It is comfortable to drive and offers an adequate amount of space, albeit not seven seats. On the looks side of things it has well styled looks, however isn't very innovative in terms of design. Equally the engine noise is audible from within the cabin, which isn't great. Overall however it's a technologically advanced vehicle that would still make an excellent family car.
The New & Improved Mitsubishi Shogun
The Shogun has a long history and has undergone many model improvements over the years. The latest still has the identifiable 'Shogun' looks - a high 4x4 with quite a square feel. If you're after genuine off-road performance then the Shogun might be the right car for you. It drives excellently off-road and can also comfortably seat up to seven passengers. In terms of engine choices there is just the thirsty 3.2L diesel available with a starting price of around £30,000. Due to the large engine it only offers an average fuel economy of around 36MPG, which is significantly lower than the Outlander and the ASX. Consequently this car would suit you if you are more concerned about off-road performance and durability, than about refinement and low running costs.
The Versatile Mitsubishi L200 Pickup
The L200 has many variants that deliver different features for different applications. For example there are the 4Work, 4Life models that are rough yet rugged around the edges, and moving up the scale you have the Double Cab Warrior and the 'blingy' Barbarian. If you are looking for use as a family 4x4 then the double cab is definitely the choice for you. The Warrior features an all-leather interior that looks very slick, and the top models incorporate integrated satellite navigation and air conditioning. One obvious feature of this car is the pickup bay, which might not suit everyone. But if you're regularly transporting bulky items, or if you are a dog owner then the pickup bay is perfect. You can get different types of canopy to sit on top of the pickup bay and form an enclosed bay perfect for transporting your pets in comfort. This keeps them out of the 'car' area in their own self-contained area, no noise or smells! In terms of 4x4 capability the L200 has a low-range gearbox and a centre differential to lock both axles together. It offers an average of 35MPG with a 2.5L turbo-diesel engine, so the fuel efficiency isn't great, however it does have a lot of grunt and benefits from a very low road-tax due to its classing as a commercial vehicle.
